Potjiekos (literally meaning pot food) (English pronunciation "poy-key") has been part of South Africa’s culture for many centuries – since the days of the first settlement at the Cape when food was cooked in a black cast-iron potjie pot hanging from a chain over the kitchen fire.

At Barefoot Biltong We sell a complete range of potjie pots both with and without legs, as well as flat bottomed bake pots. The most versatile pot size is a number 3 – depending on the potjie, it will make a meal for 4 – 6 people.

After buying a pot, it is important to break it in or cook in to eliminate any iron taste or black deposit on your food.

  1. Wash out thoroughly with boiling water and scouring pad and dry over a heat source.
Coat inside with any cooking oil and heat until oil begins to smoke.
    3. Using a paper towel, wipe inside clean. Repeat until towel wipes clean.
    4. The pot is now ready for use. The more you use it the better it becomes.
    5. After each use wash, dry and coat inside with oil to prevent rusting.
    6. Store in a dry place with absorbent paper inside.

Please note we only carry a small number of these pot size each week, and there might be a few days delay stock generally arrives on a Tue.
